Background of the Study
Stress is a common challenge among university students due to academic pressure, financial constraints, and personal responsibilities. Chronic stress can lead to anxiety, depression, and reduced academic performance, affecting students’ overall well-being (WHO, 2024). In recent years, mindfulness education has gained attention as an effective approach to stress management. Mindfulness involves being fully present in the moment, practicing self-awareness, and engaging in techniques such as meditation and deep breathing to improve emotional regulation (Adeyemi & Yusuf, 2023).
Despite the growing recognition of mindfulness-based interventions worldwide, their application in Nigerian universities remains limited. In Plateau State, university students often experience high levels of stress due to rigorous academic demands and limited access to mental health resources (Okafor & Musa, 2023). Mindfulness education has the potential to equip students with coping strategies that enhance their resilience and overall mental well-being.
This study seeks to investigate the effect of mindfulness education on stress management among university students in Plateau State, evaluating its effectiveness in reducing stress and promoting emotional well-being.
Statement of the Problem
University students in Plateau State face significant stress due to academic challenges, social expectations, and financial difficulties. While stress management strategies exist, many students lack access to structured programs that teach effective coping mechanisms (Okafor & Musa, 2023).
Mindfulness education has been shown to improve stress management by helping individuals regulate their emotions and develop a greater sense of self-awareness. However, little research has been conducted on the effectiveness of mindfulness programs in Nigerian university settings. This study aims to assess the impact of mindfulness education on stress reduction and propose strategies for integrating mindfulness into university wellness programs.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the level of stress among university students in Plateau State.
2. To evaluate the impact of mindfulness education on stress reduction.
3. To recommend strategies for incorporating mindfulness education into university programs.
Research Questions
1. What are the common stressors faced by university students in Plateau State?
2. How effective is mindfulness education in reducing stress among students?
3. What strategies can be implemented to promote mindfulness education in universities?
Research Hypotheses
1. University students in Plateau State experience high levels of stress due to academic and personal pressures.
2. Mindfulness education significantly reduces stress levels among students.
3. Integrating mindfulness programs into university curricula will improve students' emotional well-being and academic performance.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on university students in Plateau State, assessing their stress levels and the impact of mindfulness education on stress management. Limitations may include variations in students’ engagement with mindfulness practices and differences in individual stress responses.
